St Margaret’s Church, dedicated to St Margaret of Antioch, to differentiate it from its neighbouring church in Mountain Ash, was built in 1883 by Sir George Elliot, MP, at a cost of £5,000. The church was intended for his employees in the Powell Dyffryn Mines and dedicated to the memory of Sir George’s wife, Lady Margaret, and his daughter, Elizabeth.
It was consecrated on the 29th September 1883, with the first service held on 6th October 1883.
Parishioners at the time raised £148 10s 6d towards the cost of the £400 pipe organ, which is still in use. There was accommodation for 422 worshippers.
Today St Margaret’s is a lively, inclusive church in the Anglo-Catholic tradition. We have an active presence on social media. Our Monday evening service is particularly popular with young families. We enjoy regular social events such as quiz nights, bingo and afternoon tea- we are keen to share fellowship and friendship, as well as faith! We have an active Mother’s Union branch, meeting on the 1st and 4th Monday of the month.
